Menus and Memories From Punjab: A Book Launch and Tasting at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York City, Wednesday 9/9.

On Wednesday, September 9th from 7- 8:30 p.m., the Rubin Museum of Art launches Menus and Memories From Punjab: Meals to Nourish Body and Soul published by Hippocrene Books. The evening’s program, “The Health Benefits of Spices,” features a discussion between cookbook author Veronica “Rani” Sidhu and Naturopath Dr. Leat Kuzniar on the culinary culture of Punjab, a region of India and Pakistan, and a tasting of Rani’s recipes.

Over thirty fragrant spices and herbs are used in Punjabi cooking. Most, if not all of them, have specific health benefits. The science of life—Ayurveda—began thousands of years ago, drawing upon the knowledge that spices are nature’s pharmacy. Dr. Kuzniar will explain the benefits of the spices as the audience tastes Rani’s recipes: red lentils with pumpkin and fresh fenugreek; missee rotee; sweet basmati rice pilaf with dried fruit; and a toasted vermicelli pudding.   A classic bhangra folk dance performance will round out the program.

Tickets are $12 and available at www.rmanyc.org or 212.620.5000 X 344 Seating is limited so purchase tickets early.

Julia Child and her co-authors, commenting on their first cookbook venture, remarked, "We came tottering out of the kitchen with the gleam of authorship lighting our innocent faces." This course provides both encouragement and sound advice to cooks, recipe collectors, and writers who wish to learn more about getting a cookbook published. Prominent cookbook authors, literary agents, editors, and publishers discuss the publishing process from inception through release. Topics include identifying the market; writing a book proposal; the proper approach to literary agents and publishing houses; contractual considerations; copyright law; the use of photography or artwork; the time frame for publishing; book promotion, including advertising and public relations; the monies involved; and the possibility of profit. Also discussed is self-publishing, producing a cookbook for oneself or an organization without using a major publisher. (0 credits)

April 2009

On Wednesday, Bebeji's anniversary, my husband and I said prayers for her soul, but I always feel she is praying for me -- God bless her! It was also the day that both of my editors contacted me with work for me to do. I had been waiting weeks in anticipation. Of course, on the same day, my friend, Marybeth called to tell me the names of the five students who are to receive the "Benny Scholarship". Does this happen to you too?

On Tuesday, my friends and I had the good fortune to meet Taoist Master Chang in Lincroft. His message: review your life stories, look at the patterns, look how we are stuck in these "stories" bound to repeat our mistakes because we identify ourselves with only our roles, our drama and our form.  Where can the Grace of God come in when we are so full of illusion? Only if and when we see who we truly are can a shift from suffering take place. How ironic that I have finished a book of stories (and recipes). Was I that transparent?

Friday, April 17th is another fundraising cooking class, this time to benefit the scholarship in memory of our grandson, Benny. I want to make dishes that are fairly light. The menu will begin with Subze Tikees and Cashew/Coconut Chutney, both great starters. And this time for the main course we will make Chicken Kebabs, two versions of split moong daal -- Yellow Lentils with Spinach and with with Eggplant, Missi Rotee (Chickpea Flour Breads with Onions) and Sevian (Toasted Vermicelli Pudding). All the recipes can be found in the book.

March 2009

On Saturday, March 7th, Rani will teach a cooking class and prepare dinner to benefit the homeless of Elizabeth, NJ. Mike Guarnaccia made the winning bid for the class at a fundraiser. The menu will be similar to the one on the 25th, but in addition will have Yogurt Salad with Chickpea Crunchies, and Lemon/Coconut Rice Pilaf instead of the bread, and Mango Custard instead of the Baked Bananas.
